Alaska Auto Transport
Thinking about a stay in Alaska, or even an entire move?
It's a breathtaking part of this Earth, filled with the wildlife and untouched land normally scene in a National Park. For the scenery, it is unmatched. However that untamed aspect becomes more than inconvenient when you are traveling through it on your own. If you are an experienced driver prepared and accustomed to icy conditions, you have a pretty good chance of success.
In Canada along the Alaskan Highway, or ALCAN Highway, there are major sections where the U.S. Army decided to build in relation to the needs of World War II rather than for a safer and more desired route. The preferred route would have passed through the Rocky Mountain Trench from Prince George, British Columbia to Dawson City before turning west to Fairbanks, Alaska. Instead the Highway pursued a direction that led to an air base and took the traveler through dangerous passes and switchbacks. When these are frozen over in ice and blinded by snow, it is no time to have taken the challenge for granted.
Reconsider if you have never taken on a journey through hundreds of miles of ice and snow. Especially, if you have never really driven a vehicle larger than your car, and you are hesitant to drive a moving van. Have professionals handle these responsibilities. Fly there, have an Alaska auto transport deliver your car, and safely arrive to meet your furniture.
Should you choose not to use an Alaska auto transport, plan ahead for the following hazards and hurdles.
You will eventually have to drive through Canada to get to Alaska. Canada has strict laws about DWI and DUI regarding entry into their country. If you are burdened with a misdemeanor or a DUI type offense, you'll have to gain approval and pay an entry fee. Currently, in 2011, it is around $200. Depending on convenience and what level of their security handles this, it could be a lifetime pass or a onetime pass. If you have had a DUI or DWI within five years, things become more complicated; you might need a lawyer.
If you plan on bringing along a firearm for protection, you will need to be mindful of Canada's firearm laws. There is paperwork that you will need -- a Non-Resident Firearms Declaration Continuation Sheet. It's best to have this filled out before hand, but you must leave it unsigned. You can only sign the paperwork in front of the Canadian Customs Officer.
Prepare well, in case you are trapped in your vehicle for days. Take along the items needed to repair the vehicle you are driving. Bring along an extra spare tire. Bring food, water, and blankets for you and everyone that will be accompanying you on this trip. Sleeping bags might even be necessary; make sure they are adequate for temperatures near a 20 degree average. While some companies make the journey regularly, it is still a challenge getting through.
