Shocking facts about drinking and driving in the US

It maybe a relief to know that as per NHTSA's National Center for Statistics and Analysis, alcohol related accidents have reduced from 60% during 1982 to 39% during 2005. However, it is also a reality that three out of every ten US citizens is going to be involved in an accident related to drunk driving.

Drinking and driving kills

The government has set the legal limit to drive at 21 years. Anyone below that age and found to have even negligible amounts of alcohol in their blood will still be penalized as per law. Even persons below 21 years having BAC levels of just 0.01 or 0.02% are punishable under law. Every 2 minutes a person in the US gets injured because of drunken driving. Considering such an alarming statistic, it is not surprising that the US government has such tough laws dealing with alcoholic injuries.

Shocking effects on the body

If an Alcohol Test shows a BAC level of 0.08 or more it indicates a ‘drunk' state as per legal terms. During such a condition the body undergoes many side-effects such as the inability to perceive objects properly, making errors in judgment and even losing one's peripheral vision. As soon as one consumes more than one drink, the brain is the first to pick up alcohol. This happens because the brain contains the largest supply of blood, compared to all other organs of the body.

The portion of the brain, which controls muscular movement is affected severely by alcohol intake. That automatically means that your muscles lose their sense of coordination, which can be highly risky and fatal in a driving scenario. Your response times get slower and you stop being able to gauge and react to situations in a timely manner. If a vehicle is approaching you at a high speed, you would not be able to apply the brakes in time or swerve the vehicle away from the road. If a police officer suspects you have been drinking, he or she will ask you to go through a breath analyzer test.

Alarming statistics: the danger of drunk driving

It may sound shocking but it is a fact that over 327000 persons get injured every year because of drunk driving. In California alone, the percentage of fatal collisions from drunk driving increased by 18.4% during 2000 and 2005. No wonder then that California has one of the toughest laws against drunk driving. A fine anywhere between 390 to 1000 dollars can be slapped on a person with BAC levels above normal.

For repeat offenders, the vehicle can be impounded for even 2 years. During 2005 alone, out of all children who died in motor crashes, 21% of them were 14 years of age and below and died because of drunk driving. The same year it was found that the most number of drunk driving cases happened by persons aged between 21 and 24 years of age.

Can my charges get dropped if I offer to move out of the state?

I'm on pre-trial supervision for aggrevated DUI, open container, and reckless driving in New Mexico. The thing is since this happened I've really been trying to get my life together, and I would like to move out of the state and get a fresh start on life. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for the trial to happen and I'm on supervised probation in the mean time. I don't know anything about the law, but I'm wondering if its possible to have the charges dropped in exchange for leaving the state?
I have an attorney, I just wanted to see some answers before I go see him in a couple of days

I think so

What Vehicles Cause the Most Traffic Deaths?

The thought of allowing a teenager to get behind the wheel is daunting for any parent. Between drunk driving and distracted driving, the roads are a scary place for drivers of all ages. The good news is that traffic accident deaths have been falling in recent years. In 2009, for example, the Fatality Analysis Reporting System reported 33,800 deaths, a 18 percent decrease from only two years before. Of course, this number needs to continue to come down, and one way to do this is to understand these traffic accidents and implement strong initiatives to avoid them next time around.

To start this process, I looked at traffic accident deaths nationwide by the vehicle type that caused the accident. To a certain extent, the statistics were not surprising. Cars, pickups, and SUVs for example, were responsible for a combined than 71 percent of all traffic accident deaths nationwide. Other statistics were more surprising. Even though there are a relative small number of motorcyclists, for example, motorcycles cause a disproportionate 13.2 percent of traffic accidents with fatalities. And although pedestrians almost never cause fatal car accidents, 12.6 percent of accident victims are pedestrians.

It appears that parents, lawmakers, and enforcement officers are taking an "all hands on deck" approach to reducing car accident deaths. In a recent interview with Consumer Reports Magazine, for example, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood pledged that he would lobby Congress to pass a nationwide law against distracted driving, and vamp up enforcement on the dangerous practice, which is currently only a secondary offense. And this year, a set of Senators have announced that they will support a measure to reduce car accident deaths 50 percent by 2050. "What's needed is a sound, national blueprint for a 21st century system that's safe, efficient, and improves the mobility of people and American-made goods," said Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, one of the bill's sponsors.

So whether you are a driver, cyclists, or pedestrian, it is in everyone's interest to reduce traffic accident deaths on the state and national level. The Senators and cabinet members mentioned above will surely work hard to improve safety on city streets and highways. But it often comes down to individual drivers in individual cars changing their driving habits to adhere to road rules and stay safe. This means that if we do a little, we can still make a major impact in terms of reducing dangerous traffic accidents.
