Background check for police department application?
I'm applying for a job with a metropolitan police department that by all accounts is in dire need of new officers. I have a college degree, and a record free from anything that I would consider too serious.
However, I was written up for minor alcohol violations in 2001 and 2003 (open container, public intoxication). I was charged with DUI in 2006, for which I was acquitted.
I did some dumb things while I was in college, but I like to think I've learned from them, and really want to help out in this city.
I've read the requirements for this police department and while none of these things disqualify me in and of themselves, I'm worried that it will hinder my chances. Pretty much everything else is allright. I've got a solid employment history and no credit problems.
Can any current/former officers give me some feedback on how this will affect my background check? Any help would be appreciated.
Acquitted or not, the DUI is fairly serious. If you truly weren't intoxicated, that won't hurt you. But if you got off and some technically, the PD will view it the same as an actual DUI.
The two alcohol things aren't a big deal. But the little things add up. Also add that to your DUI charge from a couple years ago, I'm starting to see a pattern that you may have a problem with drinking.
What worries me "I did some things while in college", do you what you already posted or is there some stuff you are talking about?
If you don't meet any of the disqualifies, there is a chance of getting hired. But you will probably be going against a bunch of military guys fresh out of the service with clean backgrounds. So your background is definitely going to hold you back. Just be honest about it and maybe it will work out.
