Common Reasons For Driving Under the Influence Traffic Stops

It seems like we can not go more than a week of night time driving without seeing someone along the side of the street undergoing some type of questioning. I'd say in the past month I've come across three people taking what is often called "field sobriety tests," along the side of the road. I always ask myself, what did they do to get themselves there? After a little research, the solution(s) is surprisingly obvious. Below, I'll detail a number of the common reasons for which folks are pulled over and sometimes ultimately arrested for a DUI.

If you have ever watched an instalment of "Cops," you already know the most common side effect of drunk driving is weaving in and out of the lane. This is exaggerated, like the majority of things on tv, but it has its roots in reality. Normally drunk drivers are staying in their lane, but they keep "touching" the boundaries. In effect they are like a pinball, bouncing from side to side in order to remain in their lane. This is usually a signal to the police that the person's coordination could possibly be intoxicated, since they cannot keep a straight line with their eyes.

Next are what are known as "judgment" impairments. These basically include making basic and common mistakes which are minor traffic infractions. Rolling through a red light when making a right turn, changing lanes with no signal, and accelerating too rapidly are things that are trivial infractions on their own, but are cues to the officer the person may be impaired if they are making several judgment mistakes. The simplest way to avoid this concern is simply to take your time after sunset; even if you are in a hurry, since just a couple of beers can put you over the technical limit, drive slowly and carefully to prevent drawing attention to yourself.

The last common mistake I'll go over is failure to keep a speed. Many drunk drivers enter a heightened state of paranoia where they are going to drive fine with one mistake: they'll spend way too much time in the mirror! They might be straight inside the lines, and driving according to all necessary statutes, but it's too much to look at the road, the mirror, and the speedometer all at the same time. If the speed limit is forty five, they will consistently wander below 43 or so, and then speed back up to around fouthy-six. This can be a cue that a person is both not concentrating on what they should be, and they are probably impaired if they're having a hard time keeping their foot in one position.

If you are arrested for a DUI or DWI, contact a DUI attorney. A DUI attorney will often offer a free consultation on the case to determine if there are mitigating circumstances which may allow your penalties to be reduced or your case to be thrown out altogether. Don't go it alone; hire an experienced DUI attorney.

If you have been arrested for a DUI in the greater metro area, contact a skilled Phoenix DUI attorney immediately. A Phoenix DUI lawyer will evaluate your case for Police impropriety, procedural mistakes, or mitigating circumstances and will negotiate with the prosecution on your behalf. They have other benefits as well, such as preparing you for the possible situations you might find yourself in if arrested for DUI and arranging for you to skip the customary night in jail after your arrest. Drive safe!
