1. The most popular beer in bars and nightclubs around Australia is the humble, yet effective Victoria Bitter. If you are from overseas and are reading this, it is not Fosters, has never been Fosters and most people in Australia have never drunk a Fosters in their lives.
2. The most popular cocktail in bars, nightclubs and cocktail lounges around the world is the Martini. Popularised throughout the second half of the 1900's due to the James Bond series, the original Martini in the high ball spawned a whole range of variations including the Appletini, Buckeye Martini and Chambord Martini.
3. Penfolds the wine producer make 6 of Australia's top 50 wines. Furthermore, the majority of Australia's favourite wine comes from South Australia.
4. Vodka just happens to be the most popular liquor in the world by volume. The numbers are largely beefed up by Russia and the ex soviet states, however due to the ease by which it mixes, as well as the vast number of cocktails it is in, Vodka by far is the drink of choice in bars and nightclubs around the world.
5. Australia's legal blood alcohol level for driving is 0.05%, however countries including the USA, Canada, Ireland, Singapore and New Zealand allow people to drive at 0.08%, whilst countries such as Brazil, Bangladesh and even the highest per capita consumers of beer the Czech Republic have a 0.00% limit.
6. The highest blood alcohol level ever recorded in a human was from a man in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. A man admitted to hospital after being run over was breathalysed and returned a result of 0.914%. This guy was so pissed the doctors thought their machines were broken, but on further inspection, the results were confirmed. The highest recorded level in a woman was a lady in Oregon, USA who returned a mind blowing 0.712%.
7. The most alcoholic beverage that can be legally purchased (in some places) is Everclear, with up to 95% pure alcohol content, drinking this will get you blind… literally (alcohol)
8. The hallucinogen in Absinthe is called "grande wormwood" and also known as the green fairy. So potent is this, that Vanuatu passed a law specifically prohibiting the sale of this in bars and nightclubs. Also, it was once thought that drinking too much of the stuff gave you a specific disease, appropriately called "Absinthism."
9. Alcohol as we know it is in fact "ethanol" which is used as an alternative fuel to petrol.
